Weight Loss Myths

Losing weight, exercising more and eating healthier are regularly in the top 5 resolutions for the new year. If you are planning on making weight loss a priority and paying more attention to diet and exercise, don’t fall into these common misconceptions.

 

You’ll lose weight if you just eat healthier food. 

Minimally processed food has more fiber and provides greater satiation. It is fundamental to a weight loss program. BUT! Overeating healthy food will prevent weight loss just as surely as overeating junk food. Caloric deficit is the driving force of weight loss, not how healthy your food choices are.

 

Exercise and diet are enough.

Exercise and diet form the backbone of a weight loss program. But people on weight loss programs often move less during the time they are not exercising. The people who manage to keep weight off are the ones who maintain a high level of daily non-exercise physical activity. Consider using a step counter to monitor your daily activity.

 

You need high intensity exercise/ to go to the gym.

The gym isn’t everyone’s happy place and not everyone has the knees to enjoy running. That’s fine. It’s entirely possible to enjoy the benefits of exercise from home.

 

Supplements/ Superfoods are a shortcut to weight loss.

Supplements are the very last part and the least effective element of a weight loss program. If you haven’t already accounted for caloric balance and the amount of fats, proteins and carbohydrates, then supplements and superfoods will be a complete waste of time.

 

Carbohydrates make you fat.

Caloric surplus, not carbs, leads to weight gain. The reason low/ no carb diets work for many people is that eliminating carbs also eliminates the highly processed junk foods that encourage overeating and caloric excess. It’s entirely possible to lose weight while eating carbs if you stay within a caloric budget. 

 

You’ll lose weight if you just skip a few meals.

Intermittent fasting, or limiting eating to only a few hours a day, only works if skipping a meal leads to fewer calories consumed throughout the day. If eating nothing in the morning leads to binging in the evening, that might not be the case.

 

It’s too late.

While it’s true that metabolism slows down with age and hormones play a significant role in how the body stores fat, never underestimate the power your decisions have on your long-term health.
